Joseph Bernardin (1928-1996) -- Catholic bishop & cardinal

Born in Columbia SC to Italian immigrants, Bernardin served as Archbishop of Cincinnati (1972-82) and Archbishop of Chicago (1982-96). In 1983 he was the first Italian-American Bishop to be elevated to the cardinalate by Pope John Paul II. In 1986 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Died in Chicago, IL.
