William Muir (1819-1905) was a Scottish scholar.

Biography

William Muir was born April 27, 1819 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He studied at Kilmarnock Academy, at Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities, and at Haileybury College.

From 1837 to 1876, he served in the British colonial administration in India.

Back to Great Britain he served as member of the Council of India in London. In 1884 he was elected president of the Royal Asiatic Society, and In 1885 principal of Edinburgh University, until his retirement in 1903.

Muir died in Edinburgh, Scotland on July 11, 1905.
