Xerses I was King of Persia, from 486 BCE to 465 BCE.
Overview
Xerses I is well known from Greek history for his attempts at conquering the Greek mainland. Xerses won at Thermopylae and conquered Athens, but was forced to withdraw after the defeat of the fleet at Salamis.
Xerses I and the Jews
As King of Persia, Xerses I ruled over Judea.
He has been often identified with the literary character of Ahasuerus in the Book of Esther.
