Bernard de Montfaucon (1655-1741) was a French scholar.
Biography
Bernard de Montfaucon was born January 13, 1655 at Aude [France].
After serving as a captain of grenadiers in two military campaigns, he joined the Benedectine Order in 1675 in the monastery of Bream in Toulouse.
He learned ancient languages (Greek, Hebrew, Chaldean, Syriac, and Coptic), becoming an expert in Greek paleography and in the study of the Church Fathers.
Montfaucon died December 21, 1741 in the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
