Shemaryahu Talmon (1920-2010), scholar
Shemaryahu Talmon (Shemaryahu Zelmanowicz; 1920-2010) was a Polish-born Israeli scholar.
Biography
Shemaryahu Talmon was born in Skierniewice, Poland in 1920. He studied at the Jüdisches Reform-Real Gymnasium in Breslau, Germany. In 1939, after a three-month internment in Buchenwald concentration camp, he emigrated to Palestine. He received his PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1956. He was J. L. Magnes Professor of Bible at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and chief editor of the Hebrew University Bible Project. In 1997, he was awarded the Israel Prize, for Biblical studies. A member of the Enoch Seminar, he attended its meetings in Venice (2003) and Camaldoli (2007).
