Decimus Clodius Septimius Albinus (150 – 197 CE) ruled between 193 and 197 CE in the Western part of the Roman Empire.
Overview
Clodius Albinus, from a prominent African family, was proclaimed emperor in 193 CE by the legions under his command in Britannia and Hispania, who refused to acknowledge Didius Julianus. He was defeated and executed in the aftermath of the battle of Lugdunum by Septimius Severus, by then sole Emperor.
Early Career
Clodius Albinus was born in 150 CE at Hadrumetum in Africa. He began his cursus honorum in the army, and served in the East in 175 CE, helping in the quelling of the rebellion of Avidius Cassius, convincing the legions stationed in Bithynia not to pass to the usurper. Commodus appointed him governor of Gallia Belgica, and in 191 CE, he was appointed governor of Britannia.
Imperial Succession
At the accession to the Imperial purple of [[Didius Julianus] in 193 CE, Clodius Albinus was acclaimed emperor by the three legions stationed in Britannia, and by the one stationed in Hispania, making him the undisputed master of the western part of the Roman Empire. Meanwhile, the legions of Pannonia had proclaimed Emperor Septimius Severus, and those of Syria, Pescennius Niger. Septimius Severus marched to Rome and had Didius Julianus deposed and executed. Clodius Albinus allied himself to Septimius Severus, and in 194 CE, he shared together a consulship, accepting the title of Caesar. From 194 till 196 CE, Septimius Severus was in the East, defeating Pescennius Niger and his allies. In 196, once he understood that he would have been the next target of Septimius Severus, Clodius Albinus proclaimed himself Emperor as Imperator Caesar Decimus Clodius Septimius Albinus Augustus, and crossed from Britain to Gaul. He was successful in defeating Virius Lupus, the legate of Septimius Severus, however he was unable to purchase the allegiance of the legions stationed on the Rhine. At the beginning of 197 CE, Clodius Albinus was defeated by Septimius Severus at the battle of Lugdunum. In the aftermath of the battle, he was captured and executed together with members of his family by the victorious Septimius Severus.
