Mircea Eliade (1907-1986), scholar

Mircea Eliade (1907-1986) was a Romanian scholar.

Biography

Romanian historian of religion, writer, philosopher. Taught at the University of Bucharest, 1933-39. After the war was in France at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris. In 1959 moved to the United States at the University of Chicago. Fluent in Romanian, French, German, Italian and English. Highly influential as a scholar, remained a controversial figure for his past support in Romania for fascist and anti-Semitic groups.
