Hasmonean Fortresses / Herodian Fortresses
Overview
The Alexandrium was one of the fortresses built by the Hasmoneans to secure the eastern border.
It was the first major Hasmonean fortress to be restored by Herod the Great in 38 BCE.
Herod used the fortress as state prison for members of the royal family, including Mariamne and her mother Alexandra in 30 BCE.
