Philip Trajetta (Filippo Traetta; 1777-1854), composer
Born in Venice (Italy), Filippo Traetta was the son of composer Tommaso Traetta. Involved in a failed revolution against King Ferdinand IV of Naples, he fled to America in 1800 and settled in Boston, MA, where he founded the American Conservatorio of Boston--the first such institution in the United States. He relocated to New York City about 1809 and by 1812 founded the American Conservatorio of New York. Composed cantatas, oratorios, and an opera. Died in Philadelphia, PA.
