John within Judaism

Tuesday, March 7, 2023 -- 9am-11:30am EST

The online colloquium will explore the methodological and conceptual implications of a reading of the Gospel of John "within Judaism," as part of the broader trend of reading the texts of the NT (Paul, Mark, Matthew, Luke) as Second Temple Jewish literature. What does "within Judaism" mean? How does it interact with categories like sectarianism, anti-Judaism and supercessionism, often applied to the same texts? Benjamin Reynolds (chair), Wally Cirafesi and Adele Reinhartz will introduce the discussion among a large panel of specialists, moderated by Gabriele Boccaccini. Joshua Scott is the secretary and technical assistant of the event.

Schedule

  • 9:00am EST -- Welcome (Ben Reynolds, chair)
  • 9:05-15 - Wally Cirafesi
  • 9:15-25 - Adele Reinhartz
  • 9:25-10:40 - Discussion among a panel of specialists on "John within Judaism: methods and implications" -- Gabriele Boccaccini (chair), Lori Baron, Bill Loader, Deborah Forger, Susan Hylen, Cecilia Wassen, Paul Anderson ...
  • 10:40-10:45 - Break
  • 10:45-12:00 - Discussion among a panel of specialists on "The within-Judaism perspective in the study of the New Testament" -- Gabriele Boccaccini (chair), Mark Nanos, Magnus Zetterholm, Frantisek Abel, John VanMaaren, Isaac Oliver, Jocelyn McWhirter, Cecilia Wassen, Karin Zetterholm, Archie Wright, Matthew Novenson ...

Letter of invitation

The Enoch Seminar is organizing an online colloquium on the methodological and conceptual implications of a reading of the Gospel of John "within Judaism," as part of the broader trend of reading the texts of the NT (Paul, Mark, Matthew, Luke) as Second Temple Jewish literature. What does "within Judaism" mean? How does it interact with categories like sectarianism, anti-Judaism and supercessionism, often applied to the same texts? Benjamin Reynolds (chair), Wally Cirafesi and Adele Reinhartz will briefly introduce the discussion among a large panel of specialists, moderated by Gabriele Boccaccini. Joshua Scott is the secretary of the event.

As a specialist in the field, we would be very delighted if you would also agree to join the panel of discussants (no paper or response preparation is required).

Here is the official schedule of your colloquium on Tuesday March 7, 2023 (9am-11:30am EST)

9am EST -- Welcome (Benjamin Reynolds, chair) 9:05-9:15 - Wally Cirafesi 9:15-9:25 - Adele Reinhartz 9:25-10:25 - Discussion among a large panel of specialists on "John within Judaism: methods and implications" (moderated by Gabriele Boccaccini) 10:25-10:30 - Break (5m) 10:30-11:30 - Discussion among a large panel of specialists on "John within Judaism in the context of a "within-Judaism" reading of all NT texts." (moderated by Gabriele Boccaccini).

I would appreciate if you could confirm your participation at your earliest convenience.

Happy Holidays. Gabriele
