{it} I miserabili. I: Caccia all'uomo. II: Tempesta su Parigi' [1] (Italy, 1948), directed by Riccardo Freda, starring Gino Cervi (Jean Valjean), Valentina Cortese (Fantine, Cosette), Hans Hinrich.
(I) Jean Valjean, pursued through the years for a minor infraction by the implacable policeman Javert, attempts to create a life for himself and for his adopted daughter Cosette amid the revolutionary struggles of France.
(II) The story of Jean Valjean, still pursued by Javert, continues with a love developing between Cosette and radical student Marius, a blackmailing attempt by suspicious innkeeper Thenardier, and a climax on the barricades of Paris.
Freda's version of the film ran for over three hours in length and was released as two separate films in Italy one week from another in January 1948. The film became the highest-grossing Italian film production of the year.
