Abstract

"A history of the Jews of Venice from their first recorded presence in 1152 to their persecution under the fascist regime and the Nazi occupation. Describes moneylending during the Middle Ages, ritual murder accusations, persecutions, and trials conducted by the Inquisition. Focuses on the reactions of Christians to the political success of some Jews during the 19th century. Under the fascist regime the Jews of Venice suffered from racial discrimination, and during World War II they were interned in concentration camps."
