Black Christ of Portobelo (1658) is a sculpture venerated in the Santuario de Jesus Nazareno at Portobelo, Panama.
Abstract
According to tradition, the statue of El Cristo Negro miraculously arrived at the village of Portobelo, Panama around 1658. The dark color of the statue made locals identify with this image of Jesus. Every October 21 thousands of pilgrims gather to venerate the statue in a procession.
