Charles argued that the Book of Jubileese was written in Hebrew sometime between 135-105 (during the reign of John Hyrcanus) by an anti-Hasmonaic Pharisee who aimed to "defend Judaism against the attacks of the Hellenistic spirit." The document was seen as an example of rewritten Bible and a precursor of Rabbinic haggadah.
