Umberto Rizzitano (1913-1980) was an Italian scholar.

Biography

Umberto Rizzitano was born October 18, 1913 in Alexandria, Egypt into a family of Italian emigrants.

He graduated in Arabic Literature at the University of Roma in 1937. After WW2 he directed the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo, Egypt. In 1959 he moved to the University of Palermo [Sicily, Italy] as professor of Arabic Language and Literature.

Rizzitano died in Palermo on February 6, 1980.
