Passíusálmar <Icelandic> / Passion Hymns (1666) is a collection of 50 poems by Hallgrímur Pétursson.
Abstract
The Hymns describe the Passion of Jesus from his arrival to Gethsemane to his death and burial.
They became a very popular expression of Icelandic religious life.
Editions
Written between 1656 and 1659. First published in 1666.
Translations
Translated into English in 1913, and then in the 1950s by Arthur Charles Gook (first published in 1966).
Adaptations
Set to music by several Icelandic composers, including Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, Jón Hlöðver Áskelsson, and Sigurður Sævarsson.
