Athronges (late 1st century BCE) was a Jewish rebel and royal claimant, who led a rebellion in Judea against Herod Archelaus and the Romans, around 4 BCE.
Overview
According to Flavius Josephus, Athronges was a shepherd. He and his brothers were renowned for their bravery and strength. Athronges made an explicit messianic claim, proclaiming himself king. Herod Archelaus and the Romans had trouble subduing the revolt, which may have lasted two years.
