Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) was an African-American artist.

Biography

Tanner, who in 1894 moved to France to escape racial discrimination, was the first Afro-American painter to gain international acclaim.

Tanner made several painting of biblical subject. Between 1897 and 1899, he spent eleven months in the Holy Land
