Zerubbabel (6th century BCE) was a member of the House of David

Biography

Together the Zadokite high priest Joshua, Zerubbabel led the return of the Jews from Babylon after the exile and laid the foundations of the Second Temple in the early Persian period.

Zerubbabel in ancient sources

Zerubbabel is mentioned in Ezra-Nehemia, in 3 Ezra, and in Zechariah.

Book of Zechariah

Zechariah 6:9-14 (reconstructed text) -- The word of the Lord came to me: "Collect silver and gold and make crowns, and set <them> (MH: it) on the head of <Zerubbabel and> the High Priest Joshua son of Jehozadak; say to him [i.e. Zerubbabel]: 'Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Here is a man whose name is Branch, for he shall branch out in his place and he shall build the Temple of the Lord; he shall bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule on his throne, There shall be a priest [i.e. Joshua] by his throne, with peaceful understanding between the two of them.
