Bethlehem was a small village in Judea near [[Jerusalem]].
For theological reasons (as it was believed that the Messiah Son of David would come from Bethlehem), the Gospels of Matthew and Luke made Bethlehem the birthplace of [[Jesus of Nazareth]].
During the Bar-Kokhba revolt, Bethlehem was occupied by the Romans and its Jewish occupants expelled.
