A first unsuccessful military campaign in Egypt in 351 BCE led to rebellions in Cyprus and Sidon, that Artaxerses brutally repressed.

In a second campaign in 343 BCE Artaserses III regained control of Egypt, the region would remain under Persian control until the invasion of Alexander the Great.
