History

Capernaum was a small village in Galilee. Mentioned by Josephus, it was the center of the preaching of Jesus of Nazareth.

Capernaum in Scholarship

Identifies since 1856 with Tell Hum, the site has been systematically excavated since the Franciscans purchased it in 1894. The ruins of a 2nd century synagogue as well as of a site renamed Peter's House have been found and are today visited by thousands of tourists.
