Biography
Orientalist, philologist of Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic. The father of Biblical research in Switzerland. In his commentary on Revelation (Diligens atque erudita enarratio libri Apocalypseos Ioannis, 1549) and 4 Ezra maintained the identification of Antichrist with the Papacy, yet showed a genuine attempt to extricate himself from the morass of contemporary polemics and come nearer to discovering what the apocalyptic writers wished their readers to understand.
