Lawrence H. Schiffman (b.1948) is a Jewish-American scholar. Professor at New York University (New York, NY).

Biography

Lawrence H. Schiffman (1948 - ). Qumran specialist. B.A. and M.A. 1970, Brandeis University; Ph.D. 1974, Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, Brandeis University. Ethel and Irvin A. Edelman Professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies and Chairman of the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies, New York University. A leading Qumran scholar, Schiffman presents the scrolls as Jewish texts that have limited relevance for Christianity. Schiffman was instrumental in obtaining full access to the scrolls by the academic community, and has dedicated a significant part of his professional career to publishing the scrolls, much of his work appearing in the Oxford series Discoveries in the Judean Desert. Former editor of Dead Sea Discoveries. Editor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls (2000). Editor of the Center for Online Judaic Studies in New York. Member of the Enoch Seminar and of the journal Henoch.
