< ... -- Fourth Enoch Seminar -- Fifth Enoch Seminar -- Sixth Enoch Seminar -- ... >

Overview

The Fifth Enoch Seminar was held in Naples, Italy on "2 Enoch."

The Fifth Enoch Seminar was organized by the Michigan Center for Early Christian Studies, the University of Michigan (Dept. of Near Eastern Studies), and the University Naples "Federico II", in collaboration with and the University of Naples "L'Orientale."

The Seminar focused on the role of Enoch, Adam and Melchizedek as mediatorial figures in Second Temple Judaism, with special emphasis on 2 Enoch.

18 papers circulated in advance and were discussed at the conference, at the introduction of 18 respondents. Among the newcomers: Harold Attridge, Christfried Boettrich, Rachel Elior, Steven Fraade, Gabriella Gelardini, Alexander Kulik, Jack Levison, Basil Lourie, Eric Mason, Ludmilla Navtanovich, Alexander Toepel, Johannes Tromp.

The conference opened with the groundbreaking announcement of the discovery of the Coptic fragments of 2 Enoch ("No Longer Slavonic Only").

The Proceedings were published by Brill in 2012; see New Perspectives on 2 Enoch: No Longer Slavonic Only (2012 Orlov, Boccaccini), edited volume. An additional collection of "short papers" appeared in the journal Henoch; see Enochic Traditions and Mediatorial Figures in Second Temple Judaism and Their Legacy in Early Christianity, Rabbinic Judaism, and Islam (2011 Zurawski), edited volume
