Pierre Gassendi (1592-1655) was a French philosopher, priest, scientist, astronomer, and mathematician. A friend and disciple of Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc, after his death he published his biography, in which he detailed his efforts at recovering the Book of Enoch and how he acquired a copy of it in 1636. Gassendi's biography (published in Latin in 1641, and translated into English in 1657) was responsible for spreading the belief that the "lost" Book of Enoch had indeed been "recovered," until in 1681 Hiob Ludolf proved that Peirecs's manuscript was not a copy of the Book of Enoch but a theological treatise containing only citations of and allusions to the prophecies of Enoch.
