Still a child, he entered the Basilian monastery of Grottaferrata, where he studied ancient Greek, and of which he became the Abbot (1879-82). ''Scriptor graecus'' of the Vatican Library since 1873, in 1882 he moved to Rome as Vice-Librarian. He remained there for twenty years, until his retirement in 1902. During his tenure, he edited the publication of numerous Greek manuscripts, including the ''Codex Vaticanus'' of the Bible.
