Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903) was a German scholar. One of the greatest classicist and intellectuals of the 19th century: historian, archaeologist, jurist, journalist, politician and writer. Professor at Berlin, 1861-1887. Editor from 1861 of the monumental Corpus Inscriptiorum Latinarum. Nobel Prize for literature in 1902 for his work on Roman History. His work contains numerous references to the Jews in the Roman Empire. A staunch nationalist, in 1870 with over 70 influential figures protested publicly against anti-Semitic incitement in the name of religious tolerance and respect for the distinctiveness of the Jewish culture within German society.
