José de Acosta was born at Medina del Campo in 1539.

Jesuit missionary and naturalist. A lecturer in theology at Ocana [Spain], subsequently spent most of his life in Central America, 1564-1594. His ''Historia natural y moral de las Indias'' (1590) is one of the first and best descriptions of the New World and its inhabitants. After returning to Europe, he taught theology in Rome and eventually became the rector of the college at Salamanca, Spain.


He died in Salamanca on February 15, 1600.
