==Overview==

Founded by the Insubres, a Celtic people, and then a Roman colony, the city developed as an important center in the region. From 286 to 402 CE, Milan was declared the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The city has remained the major business and cultural centre in the Lombardy region in Northern Italy and the engine of contemporary economy in Italy.
