The term Sons of Levi originally denoted all members of the House of Levi. In the post-exilic period it came to denote those members of the House of Levi who served as Levites, or Servants of the Priests, while the Sons of Aaron served as Priests, and the Sons of Phinehas as High Priests.

Overview

In Gen 49 the Sons of Levi are cursed to be scattered among Israel.

In Deuteronomy the Sons of Levi are Priests, likely a consequence of the Reform of Josiah.

Ancient sources

Gen 46:11 -- The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.

Lev 6:16 -- These were the names of the sons of Levi according to their records: Gershon, Kohath and Merari... [19] The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. These were the clans of Levi according to their records.

Num The families of the tribe of Levi, however, were not counted along with the others.


Num 26:59 -- The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses and their sister Miriam.
