John Bowman (1916-2006) was a Scottish Australian scholar.

Biography

John Bowman was born in Ayr, Scotland. He studied at Glasgow University, Balliol College, and the University of Oxford where he received his PhD in 1945. In 1947 he was appointed to the Department of Semitic Studies at Leeds University, England. In 1959 he moved to Australia, at the University of Melbourne, where he spent the rest of his life, playing a crucial role in promoting the study of the Middle East in Australia. Bowdan died on May 8, 2006, four days short of his ninetieth birthday.
