Joseph M. Baumgarten (1928-2008) was an Austrian-born Jewish-American scholar. Born in Vienna, Austria on September 7, 1928. His family moved to the United States in 1939 when Austria fell under Nazi rule. Was ordained a rabbi in 1950. PhD (1954) in Semitic Studies at John Hopkins University.
