Kitto’s work is a variation on the theme of the history of the Jewish people from creation to the present day that was very popular in the nineteenth century.  More particularly, he focuses on the history of Palestine itself, from the flood to the present, situating the reader in the historical and contemporary geographical environment as well as the history of the near eastern and classical worlds.  His sections on the second temple period follow primarily Josephus and 1-4 Maccabees, yet he interlaces the straightforward history with his own observations, often in his deterministic outlook on the destruction of Jerusalem.

A variation on the theme of the history of the Jewish people from creation to the present day that was very popular in the nineteenth century. More particularly, it focuses on the history of Palestine itself, from "the flood" to the present, situating the reader in the historical and contemporary geographical environment as well as the history of the near eastern and classical worlds. The section on the second temple period follows primarily Josephus and 1-4 Maccabees, yet the author interlaces the straightforward history with his own observations, often reflecting his deterministic Christian outlook on the destruction of Jerusalem.
