Alfred Ernest Garvie (1861-1945) was a Scottish scholar.

Biography

Alfred Ernest Garvie was born at Zyrardow, a Polish town under Russian rule, where his parents' Scottish families had migrated in the 1820s to work in the linen and flour trades. Fluent in English, German and Russian, and proud of his Scottish Reformed identity, in the 1870s he was sent back to Great Britain to complete his education. He attended the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Oxford. He remained in England the rest of his life as a Congregational minister and professor of Religion at London's College.
