Lee I. Levine is an American-born Israeli scholar.
Biography
Lee I. Levine is an American-born rabbi, archaeologist and historian of classical Judaism. Levine is a professor of Jewish history and archaeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received degrees at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS), where he was ordained as a Conservative rabbi, and Columbia University. He was a student of Gerson Cohen. In 1961, Levine married Mira Karp. Levine has also taught at Yale University and the Seminary of Judaic Studies in Jerusalem. He has directed several archaeological digs, among them a dig in Caesarea and the excavation of the Hurvat 'Ammudim Synagogue. He is the author of Judaism and Hellenism in Antiquity and The Ancient Synagogue, one of the most comprehensive texts on the subject. Today Professor Levine is Professor at the Dept. of History of the Jewish People; Institute of Archaeology - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem , Israel, and he holds the "Rev. Moses Bernard Lauterman Family Chair" in Classical Archaeology. Professor Levine had been visiting professor at Yale University in the years 1986–87, 1995, 2000 and at Harvard University in the years 1986–87 of Jewish History. Professor Levine chaired the following Academic Committees Editorial Board, Izhak Ben-Zvi Institute (1978–92), Board , Israel Exploration Society (1984-), Advisory Board, World Union of Jewish Studies (1989-), Preservation Commission, Israel Antiquities Authority (1994), Academic Advisory Board, Schechter Institute for Jewish Studies (1996-), Panel of Experts, Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture (1998-), Center for the Study of the History of Eretz-Israel, Yad Ben-Zvi and Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1998-), Chairman, Eretz-Israel Studies in Israeli High Schools , Israel Ministry of Education (2000-), Ars Judaica, Bar-Ilan Journal of Jewish Art (2004-), Advisory Board, The Posner Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization, Volume II (2004-).
