''A Jewish diamond merchant, Isaac Goldberg, is murdered in a place outside Paris known as the Three Widows' Crossroads. His body is found in the car of a Danish national who lives with his sister. When the man is taken in for questioning, he denies all knowledge of the murder, but establishing his true identity is problematic. ''Maigret is spurred into action by a visit from a burglar's wife, whom he had known well many years before. She informs him that a few nights previously her husband had been in the act of burgling a house when he discovered a dead body on the floor. ==== | On his way home from a conference, Maigret stops to visit an old school friend in Fontenay-le-Comte. A man in the same train car introduces himself and asks if Maigret has come to help solve the murder case. In fact, the man’s brother-in-law had been murdered four days earlier, followed by the murder of a local widow in the same way, a blow to the head with a pipe. While Maigret is in town, a third murder is reported. Maigret soon discovers that there are two warring factions in the town, a clear class separation, and an air of suspicion that only he can put to rest.

In the 1950s, the body of young woman is found on Place Vintimille in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. The victim is dressed in an evening gown and possesses no identity documents in her purse. After the collapse of a children's sanatorium kills 62, Maigret unofficially investigates the theft of engineer's report which had correctly predicted the disaster. Now, that report has resurfaced, along with allegations that several politicians and contractors involved with the project may have suppressed its findings to avoid a scandal. Maigret must enter the shifty world of politics, dodged by members of the security police wherever he goes. In an unfamiliar world of decadent diplomatic officials, fanatic followers of political parties, and suspicious staff in politicians’ entourages, Maigret grimly sticks to what he knows best: finding the perpetrators of criminal acts.

-- 1950 [May] / (34) L'Amie de Mme Maigret / Madame Maigret's Own Case (The White Hat; The Friend of Madame Maigret)
On Rue de Turenne, two human teeth are found in the old furnace of a Flemish bookbinder, who is taken into custody. A neighboring shoemaker is willing to talk, but his stories vary with each trip he makes to the local tavern. The case seems impossibly perplexing until Madame Maigret leaves her kitchen to offer her husband able assistance.

Arlette, a stripper at Picratt's nightclub in Montmartre, reports to the police that she has overheard two men plotting to kill a "countess". Soon afterwards both Arlette and the Countess von Farnhem, a drug user, are found dead. It turns out that Arlette was romantically involved with one of Maigret's colleagues, Inspector Lapointe. A man named Oscar becomes the lead suspect after Maigret finds out that he used to be the Countess's butler. Maigret uses another drug user, Philippe, to lead him to the killer, who is shot dead by Lapointe.

-- 1951 [Oct] / (38) Maigret et la Grande Perche / Maigret and the Burglar's Wife
Maigret is spurred into action by a visit from a burglar's wife, whom he had known well many years before. She informs him that a few nights previously her husband had been in the act of burgling a house when he discovered a dead body on the floor. Horrified, he had fled the scene, and then left the country - writing to his wife by letter. Maigret is inclined to investigate a prominent dentist, who lives with his domineering mother, and has a wife who has apparently "gone away on holiday" - although Maigret knows he can prove nothing unless he can find the body.

-- 1953 [Jul] / (42) Maigret a peur / Maigret Is Afraid
On his way home from a conference, Maigret stops to visit an old school friend in Fontenay-le-Comte.
