Swiss boy Jean Amsler is inconsolable when his mother dies. His father is also in mourning, but eventually remarries a woman who already has a daughter of her own. Neither his father nor his new stepmother understand the depth of Jean's grief, or the hurt that the various changes to the household are causing him.
