Salome's Dance (1907) is a solo dance performance by Bianca Froelich (chor.).
Abstract
As was common practice, dancer Bianca Froelich (1883-1977) substituted soprano Olive Frenstad during Salome's Dance of the Seven Veils in the New York (Met) premiere of Richard Strauss's opera on 22 January 1907. Her realistic performance contributed to the scandal and the show was cancelled within days. By public demand, Froelich immediately began performing her opera choreography at the Lincoln Square Variety Theater before wildly enthusiastic audiences. Salome might have been a new character, but at the turn of the century the genre of Oriental erotic dance was as fashionable as ever. Soon, "Salome dancers" became a familiar presence in vaudeville theaters.
