According to Christian traditions, Relics of Bartholomew are (or were) preserved in several locations, notably, the Basilica of San Bartolomeo all'Isola in Rome, Italy (his Tomb), Canterbury Cathedral, England [his Arm], and the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, Frankfurt [Germany] (his Skull).

Overview

Tomb of Bartholomew at Benevento

The legend goes that after his martyrdom in (present day) Azerbaijan or Armenia, Bartholomew's body is said to have been transported (somehow miraculously) to the Island of Lipari [Italy] in 546. In 809, these remains were moved from Lipari to Benevento, but a reliquary containing some fragments of the skin of the Apostle is still displayed in Lipari.

Being taken from Lipari, the remains of Bartholomew were carried to Benevento in where they are still preserved in the Church of Saint Bartholomew.

and in 983, Holy Roman Emperor Otto II brought them to Rome, in the Basilica of San Bartolomeo all'Isola.

The Arm of Bartholomew

Canterbury Cathedral [England] -- In the 11th century, the bishop of Benevento gave as a gift an arm of the Saint to King Edward the Confessor, who housed it in a place of honor in Canterbury Cathedral. The relic disappeared at the Reformation and it has not been seen or heard of since the sixteenth century.

The Skull of Bartholomew

Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, Frankfurt [Germany] -- As late as 1238 some of the skull of the Saint was transferred to Frankfurt [Germany], and preserved in the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew.
