La religion d'Israël (1901) is a book by Alfred Loisy.
Abstract
This work presents the history of the Jewish religion, its relationship with other religions and peoples, and the particularity of the Jewish religion. Loisy places Judaism within the context of the history of ancient Near Eastern religions. He presents and explains the sources that he uses, for the most part, the biblical texts. The history that he exposes is the history of Jewish people, from its origins until 70 CE. He takes a critical look at the formation of the biblical texts. He only deals with the period of the Second Temple in the fifth and sixth chapters. In these chapters Loisy also uses some apocryphal and pseudepigraphical books, but in a very isolated way. He uses above all the biblical books written in this period to describe the development of religion and the development of the messianic idea. He finishes with the Christian schism and the “conservative” choice of official Judaism. -- Matteo Silvestrini, University of Lausanne.
