In the Second Temple period, the Aaronites / Sons of Aaron / House of Aaron are the "priests" of Israel.

Overview

According to the priestly post-exilic ideology, among the Sons of Levi, only the Aaronites were "priests". The Aaronites were divided in 24 families, each serving in the Temple for a week. 16 families claimed descent from Eleazar, and 8 from Ithamar.
