Following the execution of Mariamne in 13 BCE, However, Antipater came into play again for the succession to Herod. The competition among the sons of Herod was fought to the last shot. For some time it appeared that Antipater could get Herod's heritage, or an important portion of it. In 5 BCE, however, he was charged with the intended murder of his father, before the governor of Syria, [[Publius Quinctilius Varus]]. Once the guilty verdict was approved by [[Augustus]] in 4 BCE, Antipater II was executed.
