"This is a collection of ten studies that were written in a period of nine years for different venues. They present a historical approach to a topic, which was until recently considered to be the subject of theology mainly: the prophets and the prophetical phenomenon in the world of the Early Christians. The studies deal with the suppression of prophecy and the transition from prophecy to doctrine after the end of the second century in the Christian tradition. The book is completed with the study of two further topics related to prophecy: those of asceticism and magic, the latter category including the prophets of the heterodox heretics."-- Publisher's description
