Based on a novella the author had published in 1966 in New Worlds, the science-fiction novel tells the story of Karl Glogauer, a man who travels from the year 1970 in a time machine to 28 CE, where he hopes to find the historical Jesus. What he finds is a retarded man who can barely repeat his name.
