Erik Christian Haugaard (1923-2009) was a Danish American novelist.
Biography
Born in Frederiksberg, Denmark. When the Nazis invaded Denmark in 1940, he fled to the United States, serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. As a writer of books for young adults, he received many awards, as well as for his translation of Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales and Stories (1978).
Many of Haugaard stories tell the experience of a child who comes to age at a time of turmoil and stress, due to war, loss of family, hunger, and danger. The story of Masada provides a perfect setting for such a story.
