Abstract
The Life of John the Baptist is illustrated in four episodes:
- 1. Birth of John the Baptist
- 2. John the Baptist in the Desert, and Preaching of John the Baptist
- 3. Beheading of John the Baptist
- 4. Banquet of Herod
History and current location
Carpaccio painted the four stories from the life of John the Baptist between 1452 and 1465, for the Cappella Maggiore of the Duomo of Prato [Italy], where they are still located. On the opposite wall Lippi painted four parallel Stories from the Life of Stephen (1465 Lippi), art.
