Born in Sicily (Italy), Antinelli was from a noble Sicilian family. He was forced into political exile in 1821 and came to reside at Boston, working as an exchange or money broker. By April 1849 he was appointed the Consul in New York by the government of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. His son Emmanuel Joseph Attinelli, Jr. (born in New York) was a numismatic.
