==Abstract==

The Schurer project, the revision of Emil Schurer’s classic ''Geschichte des judischen Volkes im Zeitalter Jesu Christi'', first published in 1874 but revised and enlarged in 1886-98 (2nd ed.) and 1901-1909 (3rd/4th editions), began in 1964 when Matthew Black commissioned the translation of Schurer’s German text into English.  The project continued with the work of Geza Vermes, Fergus Millar, and Martin Goodman, who substantially revised Schurer’s work.  In addition to the translation work the Vermes/Millar revision (1) removed obsolete bibliography and polemical material; (2) added post-Schurer bibliography; (3) modernized the references to texts, papyri, inscriptions and coin legends; and (4) added archaeological, epigraphic, papyrological and numismatic references including the Qumran materials and Bar Kochba documents. - '''Ronald Ruark''', University of Michigan
