{sw} Barabbas <Swedish> (1950) is a novel by Pär Lagerkvist.

Abstract

Barabbas becomes interested in Jesus after being freed because of him, but is then imprisoned again for participation in a Christian mob.

From a marginal character in the Passion story, Barabbas becomes the unwilling co-protagonist of the event, as the man for whom Christ died, and who has to spend the rest of his life trying to come to terms with why he was chosen to live.

Immediately hailed as a masterpiece (Lagerkvist won the Nobel Price in Literature in 1951), was one of the most successful biblical novels of the 1950s.
